Catalonia Has A Right To Self-Determination, To Secede From Spain And To Form A New Government ~ LPR Envoy And Foreign Minister Vladislav Deinego

The people of Catalonia have a right to self-determination and to settle issues they face, said LPR envoy to Minsk negotiations Vladislav Deinego.

LPR Foreign Ministry: Catalonia has a right to self-determination

Catalan government -  Parlament de Catalunya - voted through a motion on Friday calling for the Catalan government to secede fully from Spain to form a new republic, following a referendum deemed illegal by central Spanish government. In response, Madrid enacted Article 155 of the constitution sacking regional government and calling regional elections for 21 December. Spain’s interior ministry named a new Catalan police chief, who has insisted that the 17,000 officers should remain neutral.

Answering the question about similarities between  the situation in Spain and in Donbass in 2014 Deinego said these two cases may seem  identical, but in truth they develop in accordane with different patterns.

"In Spain, the sides try to find a political solution. Madrid is reluctant to use force, it uses political methods," he said.

Deinego wished that back in 2014 Donbass and Kiev had reached an agreement allowing a more efficient exercise of people's rights. "The situation today might have been very different."

Answering to a question on a possibility of Catalonia recognition, LPR acting foreign minister said that "it might have been interesting" if the sides had been engaged in a dialog.

"A mutual recognition might have been interesting… But it is a bilateral process. Relationship should be established, a dialog commenced… Unilateral recognition would benefit neither Catalonia nor us," Deinego maintained. "It is a matter to be considered, but it is too early to talk about something particular."
