Today, on May 23, the videoconference of the working group on the security of Donbass issues took place. The results of the videoconference were commented by Permanent Plenipotentiary Representative of the DPR to the negotiationsof the Contact Group in Minsk Denis Pushilin.
“The working group on the security discussed today in the videoconference mode the situation around the Donetsk Filter Station, as well as the additional measures to monitor the compliance with the ceasefire. Among the measures that could reduce the tension, first of all, we consider the withdrawal of forces and armaments The main reason for the escalation of the tension around the station is the desire of the Ukrainian side to take control of the strategically important life-support facility for use as another instrument of the blockade against Donbass.
Since January 2017, the AFU have gradually brought their positions closer from a distance of 1.5 km from the station to 70-150 meters. Today, the opposing sides can see each other with the naked eye, hence the constant provocations, shelling and escalation. But the most important thing is that the well-being of half a million recipients of water on both sides of the front line depends on the stable operation of the DFS.
However, neither the importance of providing water to the civilian population nor the threat of an ecological catastrophe in the event of shells falling into a chlorine storage facility has persuaded the Ukrainian side into a constructive dialogue. The Ukrainian side refuses from the idea of withdrawal of forces around the station. Discussion of the situation around the DFS will continue in the working order,” Denis Pushilin noted.
