US STATE DEPARTMENT BLAMES KIEV FOR CORRUPTION AND CENSORSHIP ~
The government of Ukraine does not properly investigate crimes against journalists and fighters against corruption, the US Department of State said in a report on the state of human rights in the world in 2017.
“Other violations concern the widespread corruption of the government, censorship and blocking of websites, the inability of the government to punish those who commit cruelty against journalists and fighters against corruption, cruelty against national minorities and members of sexual minorities,” the report said.
“The government as a whole has not been able to take the appropriate steps to hold a trial or to punish the majority of officials committing crimes, which leads to a climate of impunity,” the report says.
“The most significant human rights problems in Ukraine include unlawful killings and politically motivated disappearances (people) in the context of the conflict in the Donbass, torture and life-threatening conditions in prisons and detention centers, arbitrary arrests and detentions, lack of independence of the justice system,” – the authors of the document note.
